The right side of my Facebook feed is aggravating because there& #39;s no argument, just contrarianism. I value honest debate, even where I disagree, because it& #39;s not healthy to just block everyone and live in an echo chamber. But they& #39;re not *for* anything, just against everything.
They have alternatives, no solutions, just "fuck you."
We need to shut down: "Fuck you."
Masks: "Fuck you."
Social distancing, then: "Fuck you."
Okay, what& #39;s your solution? "FUCK. YOU."
They want to burn it all down with no clue how to rebuild. How do you reason with that?

Worse, these are co-workers, neighbors, relatives, and friends. People I (still) care for. And they are now making dangerous decisions based on this empty platform. They brag about going to protests and churches and defying the governor. They& #39;re holding parties this weekend.
Some are traveling to opened states, specifically to visit malls and bars and restaurants "just to get out."
Photos show no masks, no gloves, no social distancing. They& #39;ve gotten to the point they& #39;re so against everything, they& #39;ve forgotten how to care for anything.

The closest I came is when a friend worried if we stayed closed much longer, there would be "nothing to come back to." Good start.
But he had no solutions for rebuilding. Support for businesses? Expanded unemployment? Suspend mortgages? NOPE.
Just against closing.

It isn& #39;t debate, it& #39;s thrashing against change. It& #39;s refusal to accept anything but a status quo that can no longer exist. They& #39;re terrified the world is leaving them behind, that the ship is sailing, and they& #39;re throwing out anchors rather than helping to chart a course.
The good on Facebook and social media still outweighs the bad, and I still want to keep in touch with these people, if not discuss politics.
I& #39;m just looking forward to the days I can once again accept a local friend request without finding a flood of "fuck your mask" posts.
