What a lot of you seem to misunderstand is that the hadith clearly states تروه "... you see the moon." The condition of sight being the requirement. So even if it is calculated, if you don't see it you're not meeting the meaning. https://twitter.com/simmiareff/status/1264448169187971073
There is a spiritual element to seeing the moon that is not found in science. And yes, while Islam is filled with relations to science, that relationship is not meant to replace faith, but enhance it.
At the centre of science was the understanding that science is a means of loving the Divine and of beholding His beauty. But the tradition of looking at the moon with the naked eye also brings back a relationship with the Divine through faith.
It is to marvel at the Majest of Allah. As He has "...subjected to you the night and the day, the sun and the moon; and the stars are subjected by His Command." And it serves as a reminder of what has gone by and what is to come.
It is a reminder that to Allah belongs dominion, as the moon sets, and is born, and dies. As with Ibrahim (as) "when he saw the moon rising, he said, “This is my lord.” But when it set, he said, “Unless my Lord guides me, I will surely be among the people gone astray."
"And the moon – We have determined for it phases, until it returns [appearing] like the old date stalk." As perhaps a reminder of our life, and the phases we will enter: both spiritually and physically.
