1. Thread: Trump vs Alabama. Full disclosure here: I voted Trump in 2016 & will in 2020. So.... Trump is telling us not not trust Sessions but to trust his opponent. I’m calling horse-hockey. Here’s why. @Andreatellsall @1catherinesiena @justpipertoo @POTUS @phillyrich1
2. The supposed driving force behind Trump’s ire toward Sessions is the famous recusal. @TuckerCarlson @SebGorka @PolitiBunny
3. Was it correct? Yes. Comey/et al supplied false information; had they not done so, No recusal. Reading the released memos, we know that the authors intended to take out Flynn 1st, and Sessions 2nd. How do you take out Flynn? By threatening his family.
4. How do you take out or neutralize Sessions? By presenting a picture that makes him at odds with the law.
5. When Sessions recused himself he had 2 choices: either recuse himself or refuse & have the administration subjected to added media abuse over ‘ignoring the law’
6. Two crappy choices. Recusal was the lesser evil. It gave Sessions a way to protect the Trump judge appointees (which otherwise would have bern held up) and give cover to the admin.
7. But recusal also gave Sessions an opportunity to offer Trump his resignation, which was refused.
8. The problem came when Mueller’s senility allowed the investigation to go off the rails. Had Mueller done his job, it would have resulted in a few months investigation with the same result— no collusion.
9. What happened? The 2018 election. By losing the House, control of the investigation process was lost. If not, Sessions reasserts & shuts Mueller down, because the Dems couldn’t detract with impeachment.
10. So Trump has to fire Sessions, to get a ‘war-time’ AG. But remember, Trump could have done this in 2017. And if Sessions was so despised, why keep him around?
11. In those years, the SCOTUS is held, more judgeships are flipped. Now the Dems can’t run & get injunctions every time they lose sn argument.
12. Let’s also remember that in 2017 Alabama had a special Senate election to fill Sessions’ old senate seat.
13. Here’s where another angle happens. When Sessions became AG, then Gov Bentley appointed Luther Strange (who was Alabama AG) to the seat until the election.
14. Strange was investigating Bentley on a corruption charge. So that investigation was disrupted.
15. Eventually Bentley has to resign. So now we have a special election fir a senate seat. Strange is running, and who does Trump endorse? Strange. Not Mo Brooks.
16. Trump doesn’t know or is unaware that Alabama is ticked off at Strange because of Bentley. It looks like a quid quo pro; drop the investigation & you’re a senator. Alabama votes against Strange & goes for Roy Moore.
17. We all know what happens. Trump backs off Moore due to Moore’s flaws, & Dougie Jones wins. But not without voting irregularities. But what if Trump or the Alabama Repub party had pushed Mo Brooks instead of Strange?
18. No Moore. No 2020 controversy. Sessions has no seat to run for. And don’t forget that Dougie’s Highway 31 pac pushed Moore because he was a weaker opponent for Dougie. They had oppo research on Moore, just like they do on Tubberville.
19. And here we are again. And in my opinion, Trump is making the same mistake. He didn’t back the logical candidate (Byrne) when he had the chance. Sessions gets in a run off. And Jones is pushing Tubberville.
20. Tubberville is flawed. He has residency issues. His coaching history shows a pattern of deception. His financial malfeasance settlement is a real issue. And scratch hard enough, and you see Jones & Joe Trippi. <end>
