#Brown2020: we wish that we were celebrating with you in person today!

A sentimental thread about Brown University commencements, 1987-2019. 👹‍🎓🎉
When it comes to Pomp and Circumstance, @BrownUniversity is second to none.
My first Brown commencement was in 1987, the end of my first year of teaching.

Stevie Wonder & Dr. Seuss got honorary degrees.

Stevie Wonder sang several songs from the steps of Faunce. It was magical. 💖

I’ve attended every commencement since. (Except one when it poured.)
The earliest commencement photo I could find is from 1989—the year that I got to share a moment on stage with President Gregorian. Note my cool @UCBerkeley regalia.

It was also the year of the GIANT glasses! đŸ€“đŸ€Ł
There have been many amazing honorary degree recipients over the years. A personal favorite was #RBG in 2002.

I got to put her hood on. She largely practiced social distancing—way ahead of her time, as always.
In 2005, Christo and Jeanne-Claude got honorary degrees. That was quite special, even if they didn’t notice my personal tribute.
And last year, we were all entertained by John Krasinski (‘01)
I even got to present an award, and ended up with this priceless look from him. 😏😂
But the best thing about EVERY single commencement is the procession.

First, the inspiring cascade of alums.

Then, the exuberant graduating class walks joyously down College Hill, with professors on both sides of the street cheering. 🙌🙌
Finally, for a few glorious minutes, the professors walk through the crowd of cheering alums and students. 💓

It’s awesome.
We ache to do this with you, class of 2020! 💔

We want to meet your family and friends, and congratulate you in person. 📾

We will do it next year.đŸ€ž

Meanwhile, you have a special place in our hearts, #Brown2020

Congrats, best wishes, & come back to celebrate in person! 🎊
