WFH will have a lot of implications for jobs.
Predictions👇
Bit of context. Before this crisis and the WFH wave :
- Fully distributed companies ( @basecamp, @buffer, @automattic / Wordpress...) had a huge advantage, since they had access to a wider talent pool.
- But because there was way more candidates looking for remote jobs than remote companies, some of these job offers reached more than 1 000 applications, sometimes even more (for non-technical positions).
- The challenge was then to filter these applications and select the best candidates.
- 2 other challenges were time-zone and payroll (different currencies, different labor and tax laws etc...). That's why some of them made the choice of recruiting in few specific countries only
With big companies like Twitter, Square, Facebook, or Spotify going full remote, it's going to be a big wave, with many companies following the movement, and then a lot of implications :
1/ Much more offers for remote jobs, leading to fewer applications per job (but still more than located ones)
2/ Companies requesting to come to the office will struggle convincing candidates
3/ Companies with the biggest budgets, well known names (or well known VCs), will recruit even better candidates than before, since this time they won't miss the ones who couldn't relocate (to their HQ) or wouldn't have applied (not in the right city).
4/ Less known companies will lose the "remote" advantage, and will have to fight again for talents, sourcing untapped profiles and looking for hidden gems. The shortage in talents is global.
5/ Stealing talents will also be easier. Location won't be an issue anymore, and candidates will have more time and less logistic issues (less commuting) to consider offers and going through recruitment processes.
6/ Basically the local talent war will be a global talent war
7/ With companies like @Deel or @Remote payroll will be less of a challenge
8/ Time zone will remain one, so competition may not be fully global for all jobs, but semi-local (Americas&Latinas | Europe&Africa) for jobs than can't be done asynchronously (customer service, sales...).
9/ Wages of individual rock stars ("10x engineers") will increase (more competition). Average salaries in developing countries will increase too. But decrease a bit or flatten in developed countries.
10/ Developing countries may benefit from that as a whole (more income, more taxes....), but local companies will have a hard time competing, and it's going to be a serious issue.
11/ Headhunters and agencies from developing countries who will adapt quickly enough and internationalize their activities will benefit from this, since foreign companies don't have local insights & network.
12/ Lastly, for talents having proofs of technical skills (github repo, dribble portfolio...) and proofs of good communication skills (blogs, newsletters...) will be more important than ever, to be spotted by recruiters, and to stand out when applying.
