Nelson Piquet appreciation Thread:

Because this 3 times world champion somehow doesnt get nearly enough appreciation\\attention for his career.
1979
Niki Lauda called him a future world champion when they raced together.

He had only 1 point less than Niki in 1979. In a shit Brabham that season. Lets be real.

If Niki gets only 4 points you fucked up real bad.
1980
only his second season in his Legendary Partnership with Brabham.
And he got a second place in the championship.
Only behind Alan Jones.

Also. Only one of his Teammates scored 1 point that season.
1981
His first title win.
By one point! In front of Reutemann.
And 4 points in front of Alan Jones.
He won 3 races that season.

His Brabham Teammate only scored only 11 points compared to Piquets 50 points.
1982
Nelson was plagued by unreliability from the new engine partner BMW.
He lost a win in Brasil (where he collapsed on podium) because of protests from Renault and Ferrari.
Without that. He won 1 race. Getting outscored by his Teammate Patrese by 21/20 because of the lost win.
1983
All the pain from 1982 paid off this year. The BMW Turbo engine worked!
The result?
His second title. Two points in front of Prost.
With 3 wins outscoring his teammate Patrese by 59/13 this time arround.
1984
Wasnt the best year tbh. Nelson started his season with 6 races without points.
After that he scored 2 wins and another 2 podiums. Giving him P5 in the championship.
He had 9! poles.
But McLaren was just too good that season with Lauda getting his last title. (RIP Champ)
1985
His last season at Brabham and the end of an era.
Only P8 in the WC standings scoring 21 points. And 1 win in France. The last win for Brabham.
And another 2nd place in Italy.
He outscored his teammates with ease but sadly this was the end of this saga.
1986
The change from Brabham to Williams. And so started his rivalry with the legend that was Nigel Mansell.
In their first season together Nigel got the upper hand by 1 point (70/69) finishing P2 in the WC.
Piquet scored 4 wins that year.
Finishing P3.
1987
Was all about revenge for 86. He needed that title and he got it.
While off track he was pretty lound and tried to get into Nigels head constantly.
His on track performances were outstanding.
11 Podiums 3 wins. 12 points in front of Mansell.
His last title.
1988
A suprise change from Williams to Lotus after Williams lost Honda as their supplier.
And that year was. A good Mediocre year?
He was far away from title contention and its his first year without a win since 1979.
6th in the standings.
His teammate wasnt existent with 1point
1989
Was a hard year. The Lotus wasn’t competetive. Like. At all.
This season is even worse than 88 this time even without any podium.
Nakajima got trashed again 12/3 points but lets be real. Hes not somebody we should compare Nelson too.
That season was a bit of a low point.
1990
He changed team again. To Benetton.
And after the bad years at lotus this was a way better deal.
P3 in the world championship with 2 wins. His first wins since 1987. An 2 more podiums.
Overall a very good year.
He defeated his teammate Nannini by 43/21 points.
Not bad eh
1991
The last year of this amazing career. And it was another very good year.
With P6 in the standings 2 poidiums and his last win in canada.
He got his teammates under control again.
Exept this one german guy called Schuhmacher.
Who was on par with him for the end of the season
So what can we say about his career. He was fast. In every situation and I think he doesnt get the recognition a 3 time world champion deserves.

He was a great driver and a controversial personality.
And looking through this. I never realised myself how great his career was.
