Madvillainy : a thread

(Please like & RT if you enjoyed the following writeup)
The sole album between the Vaudeville villain MF DOOM & production legend Madlib remains in my opinion one of the finest rap albums of this century, it's most certainly my personal favourite.
DOOM is on his best behaviour here, his complex,free-associative rhymes would be capable of holding the listener's attention over even a mediocre instrumental (which is definitely not the case here, more on that later).
He 100% commits to the villain concept, with some really incredible narratives particularly on the track Fancy Clown. You can really feel the pain of his character as his grief over being cheated on slowly turns to anger by the time the song is over.
There's also some excellent humour on the track Great Day (one thing this party could use is more, ahem, booze). On Curls,I think the line about "tryna get a nut in his mad world" is a reference to the public's idealisation of celebrity life.
Tracks like Figaro & Meat Grinders are so rhythmically complex that they really leave my head spinning even on repeat listens. And his slow, dense delivery on all these tracks is certainly a preferable alternative to the energetic tone he was originally gonna take.
But I think the production is even more dazzling and impressive here,Madlib pulls samples from the world over and incorporates them into the album's narrative beautifully.
The thick, heavy basslines on tracks like America's Most Blunted,Fancy Clown & Accordion are straight-up awesome, and he shows the same skills for drums here as he did on The Unseen, also one of my favourite albums in this genre.
The drums on tracks like Figaro,Fancy Clown & All Caps are particularly hard & snapping, but generally across this album Madlib doesn't miss instrumentally.
The genre variety here is one of many albums that prove that hip hop is the ripest & most flexible type of music to introduce other genres into, given of course that there's a skilled man behind the boards.
So yeah, that's what I gotta say for my favourite rap album of all time. My favourite tracks are America's Most Blunted, Rhinestone Cowboy, Fancy Clown, All Caps & Accordion.
