That Sunday Times article is well worth the read, but it confirms what lots of us who had listened to people like @globalhlthtwit had been saying from the start. Unlike Herd Immunity Bob @Peston or Lady Haw Haw Kuenssberg who just regurgitated the lines fed them by Cummings. 1/10
Now, if ordinary, sentient and reasonably intelligent people knew enough to read and listen to experts in public health, rather than "Nudge Unit" nerds, why didn't the government and the media, stuffed with public schoolboys and Oxbridge alumni? 2/10
The answer is because the privilege and wealth which sent them all to public school and elite universities didn't make them smart or endow them with common sense and reason. 3/10
Rather, it made them lofty, arrogant, detached from everyday experiences. All that expensive education just confirmed their pre-existing prejudice that they're cleverer than the rest of us, including public health experts with actual experience of pandemics. They knew best. 4/10
So of course the likes of Cummings can blithely ignore the rules - he's been doing that for years. Ignoring the rules is part of that elite culture - rules are for the common people who aren't smart enough to decide for themselves. The "herd" if you like. He's not alone. 5/10
Toffs like him have been at it for centuries (and he is a toff. So are Peston and Kuenssberg - google their backgrounds) There *is* an elite in power, the same privileged, wealthy, London based shower who've been in power forever. Most of them don't have titles anymore 6/10
But they're toffs still the same. They all go to the same elite schools and universities, work in the same elite organisations, at the same elite level. They circulate at the same events, dinner parties, book launches. They all have private education, health, cleaners etc. 7/10
"Taking back control" is the biggest con job ever. It's about reinforcing the control of those elites over the rest of us, the ordinary people, the herd. That's how they think of us - a herd existing only to serve their needs. No wonder there's already 60k deaths and rising. 8/10
We're entirely dispensible, you see. Why should Dominic Cummings life be disrupted or the wealthy take an economic hit or the state have to pay for people's survival if the only cost is the lives of the plebs? Why bother stockpiling PPE when you're never going to need it? 9/10
You're going to have access to the best medicine if you get sick and your mum's in an private care home. No tower block flat for you! Throw another corpse on the bonfire there boys, it's just a care worker or a bin man or a bus driver. Plenty more where that came from! Tally ho!
