In 17th-18th century #London craftspeople were working bone & ivory on a huge scale, making incredibly sophisticated things 4000+ fragments of workshop waste from a turner's workshop were fly-tipped in The New Churchyard burial ground. Now in @MuseumofLondon. #MuseumsUnlocked 1/3
The waste came from the workshop of Benjamin Clitherow and we can see how he shaped his products on the lathe. These examples are waste from turning cattle metatarsal midshafts to make bone pocket telescope components. Studied by @MOLArchaeology . #Museumsunlocked 2/3
The final products were incredibly sophisticated sets that screwed together and required skills of bone turners and lens grinders. You can see some lovely examples of the finished products in the collections of @NMMGreenwich #Museumsunlocked 3/3 https://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/43767.html
