Something I learned during my years as an athlete... you don’t really know a person until you’ve seen how they act and react in a pressure situation.
When people are under pressure, you learn things about them you would not otherwise know. Charming friends turn out to be utterly selfish. Shy, gentle souls turn out to have spines of steel. Driven, motivated hard-asses turn out to be fiercely loyal and selflessly kind.
You learn things about yourself too. Sometimes you suspected it about yourself. Sometimes you’re surprised. Sometimes you can be proud of yourself. Sometimes you learn things you wish you hadn’t.
And the point I’m making with this? Chances are if someone’s actions right now suggest they think the rules don’t apply to them, that they’re better than everyone else, that’s what they really believe. Do you trust that? Because I sure as hell don’t.
