Going through the Cynthia Morgan tweets and it seems a lot of Nigerians are mistaking Record Labels for Charity organizations. Making it big in the Nigerian music industry is no joke. Asides talent, it requires alot of financing, experience, network and risk taking.
For every one Artiste who gets up there, there are thousands who will never make it. Record Labels take huge risks every time they sign an Artiste & most of the time, they would never make their money back. Does anyone blame the Artistes when that happens?
Then the few Artistes who eventually make it, wants to quit the record Label almost immediately after they become popular. They suddenly forget the sacrifices of the Label & focus on the money. How do you suddenly want all the profit for a business you didn’t invest in?
It’s also easy to blame the labels for offering space contracts, but these Artistes also sign these contracts for a reason; because they know how hard Music business is out there. They know all the politics that goes into being booked for a show, awards, endorsements etc.
These Artistes know they probably will never hit 1000 streams on their own. Then all of a sudden, when the label makes them super stars, they forget where they were coming from and start claiming victim hood.
The truth is that for every 10 Artistes signed to a label, only one or two may ever “blow” and the Label management knows this. Their consolation however is that the money from the few who “blows” will cover up for everyone’s running cost and even profit.
So if you’re an upcoming Artiste who thinks labels are running a charity, better think again. If you’re also not in the habit of reading contracts, better learn how to read.

After all said & done, I’d love to remind y’all that 20% of something is better than 100% of nothing. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="✌🏾" title="Victory hand (medium dark skin tone)" aria-label="Emoji: Victory hand (medium dark skin tone)">
