Always struggle to understand the mentality behind this attitude. It’s just plain weird.
Read an interesting thread a few days ago about, particularly, racism and white supremacy which highlighted the need for many people to feel superior to others. One example was a poll concerning earnings.
The poll asked if folk would be happier earning $50k if the average wage was $25k or earning $100k but the average was $200k. Current prices applied in both cases. Half the respondents opted for $50k because the idea of status meant more than spending power. Weird.
It explains a lot though; Trump, Brexit and the guy above. Trumps Make America Great Again (as long as you’re white) tapped into that innate superiority complex and is the reason his base won’t desert him, no matter what he does. Doesn’t matter that they’ll suffer because if it.
He gives them a status they think they deserve. Obama robbed them of that, Trump gave it back. He gives power to the weak, easily manipulated masses.
Same with Brexit, the ultimate manifestation of British exceptionalism. Britannia ruled the waves but not anymore and oh how Brexiters want to see that return, unrestricted by the unelected bureaucrats of Brussels.
They still believe the UK has the kind of power it used to enjoy, still believe it has respect around the world and still desire the vicarious status that being a British citizen imbues on them.
The guy above is just an extension of that. Scotland has been told so often it is no match for the majesty of the UK; a little European backwater of no consequence. He’s not content with being just a citizen of a small country; he wants status and power. The UK gives him that.
It’s no coincidence that many hardcore Scottish unionists are Brexiters and Trumpets as well since they share the same desire of small-minded folk everywhere; power, status and the need to feel superior.
