Honestly really skeeved out seeing people saying “a 22 year old is dead and that’s a lesson that people shouldn’t be critical online anymore” when the dehumanization of particularly young women performers is a much bigger problem than that.
The onus isn’t just on individual audience members to be kind, it’s also on the people and organizations who control the conditions under which whatever entertainment is produced and distributed. Those systems need to be kind.
I think most of the people I see making this a thing about online bullying mean well! But honestly if whether someone lives or dies hinges on a bunch of 10 follower little freaks saying awful shit to them, that person has already been failed on multiple levels.
Us loving performers isn’t enough to save them. There’s no amount of cute gifs or heart emojis or 8x10 purchases or fan art than can sustain a human life. They need actual support systems.
Sorry to harp on this but like as someone who has spent a lot of time in the last few years wondering if people I loved would still be alive if I’d just loved them MORE, this really bothers me.
