So for the past like two years, I’ve been developing a story and I’m super excited about it. I’ve been wanting to turn it into a graphic novel because I genuinely think it would do well, I’m not even done with it and I’m just shy of a quarter of a million words. 1/??
My problem is drawing it. I know I can do scenery and backgrounds/foregrounds. I’m good at that, it’s my forte ya know? The problem is people. It’s always been an issue. 2/???
I know I could hire someone to draw that part for me but I want this to all be from me, and I could couldn’t do it. And as my frustrations mounted I realized that I reached what’s known as “The Gaphttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="™️" title="Trade mark sign" aria-label="Emoji: Trade mark sign">”. (3/???? It’s a thread you get it)
It’s different from a “block”. When I’m blocked I can’t really come up with ideas or something to put onto paper. It’s frustrating sure, but it’s not nearly as bad as standing on the edge of a Gaphttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="™️" title="Trade mark sign" aria-label="Emoji: Trade mark sign">.
I have had so many ideas swirling around in my head, it’s so loud and bright, but the moment I put pencil onto paper or stylus to screen... I can’t do it. It just doesn’t happen, because I realize, I don’t KNOW how to do it.
That’s “The Gaphttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="™️" title="Trade mark sign" aria-label="Emoji: Trade mark sign">”. When your knowledge and experience is dwarfed by your ideas. And it’s so frustrating. I have literally cried over this.

I did a life study once in a college course but I learned nothing.
I did fair enough but my teacher was more interested in my ability to recreate scenery so he taught me things in regard to that. Which, while I’m thankful, I feel kinda cheated. That was already a strength of mine, and I wish he had helped me develop my weaker subjects.
Like the human form, faces, eyes, hands, the whole works. Without any direction on how to even start I got stumped and just sat on the edge of The Gaphttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="™️" title="Trade mark sign" aria-label="Emoji: Trade mark sign"> for years, ideas kept piling up, building and killing me.
So when I tell you the relief I feel right now, from just learning how to draw an eye, believe me, I almost cried again, but these would have been happy tears.
I found a YouTuber called @Sycra and he’s taught me more about the human eye in just one video than I think I learned in all of Drawing 102.
I’m a fast learner, but im also a visual learner. I know your probably like “duh Mariel it’s art, you have to see the drawing” I know but hear me out.
I visualize things in my mind before putting it onto paper, I need to understand the object itself completely before I draw it. Not just “draw a line here and here” those videos and tutorials only frustrate me because my brain is lacking information it needs.
So when I follow them, my drawings look awful to me, they feel incomplete. I need “This is how the eye works”. And Sycra does just that and I feel so freakin relieved.
I can not recommend his channel enough. If you find yourself stuck on a Gaphttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="™️" title="Trade mark sign" aria-label="Emoji: Trade mark sign"> definitely check him out. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💙" title="Blue heart" aria-label="Emoji: Blue heart">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💙" title="Blue heart" aria-label="Emoji: Blue heart">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💙" title="Blue heart" aria-label="Emoji: Blue heart">

Ok end of thread, I just needed to get it off my chest. Much love, Good night!
