The idea that the NHL could resume games, especially in a playoff scenario, is really just odd. So you have 24 teams, only "essential" people are allowed in the rinks, a ton of testing, precautions etc. What happens when a non-marginal % of one team gets sick?
So, say Playoff Team A loses 25% of their roster to illness and quarantine, not to mention lingering effects of the virus. Say 1-3 of those players are the best on that team?
Maybe the goalie. That team, then, just likely loses that series due to lack of ability.
Even if it's just one team, the entire playoffs are likely in question because that team was fully compromised and lost almost exclusively due to games lost from the virus. I just don't see how any scenario leads to a legitimate playoff system where the Cup isn't questioned.
And this is just talking about the playoffs in a vacuum. We're not even mentioning how some players/employees won't be comfortable playing, there will inevitably be spread, etc.
Imo, the only reason anyone is arguing for this is either 1.) the league is losing A LOT of money, 2.) some fans really just want hockey back/can't fathom it being gone for much longer, 3.) people just don't care/believe there is any danger.
As an extremely detail oriented person, I will say a lot of people in the comments here are not detail oriented
Let's play this out. The league buys out a hotel in a hub city. Players need to live on site for 2+ months and cannot leave. Can they meet with each other? How do they eat? What if they need more toilet paper? Where does that come from? Are they expected to clean the facilities?
What about the coaches and refs? What about the additional personnel associated with the team? Are journalist/reports allowed? Do they need to quarantine the same way? How does everyone eat and get basic necessities while isolated? Are all these people held to this standard?
I mean, the only way to truly control for this, basically, is for anyone who will be in direct contact with anyone involved in an NHL game in any way to be in a bubble. Otherwise, you go down an incredible number of rabbit holes to try and prevent the spread of this virus.
