I just keep un-retweeting this piece so I can retweet it again. Because even though I'm not even a Hongkie, I am feeling all of this, like, a lot. https://twitter.com/wilfredchan/status/1264289843074531335
Hong Kong means something to me. I grew up being told that the Chinese are culturally suited to obedience and authoritarian government; that our people are not natural democrats or radicals, that we automatically prefer strongmen to ‘chaos’, and are bad at thinking for ourselves.
At university I was told that that ‘Asian human rights’ and ‘Asian democracy’ were special syncretic political science terms that meant Asians didn’t have human rights or democracy and didn’t want them, or need them, or deserve them.
We knew, of course, that this was total bullshit. The Koreans showed us. The Taiwanese showed us. And after the Handover, Hong Kong fucking showed us.
Some Bitter Asian Men in the diaspora get their pride restored by the BDE of China's GDP. I get it from badass Asians resisting dictators and doing democracy well, which is I guess why I uncontrollably stan Tsai Ing-Wen. https://twitter.com/tzemingdynasty/status/1263206751517593600
And why HK's resistance last year got me right in the feels. And why it's so fucking hard to accept that this is the end now.

This, up next, is the last stand.

I just want to remember Hong Kong for what it meant to me.
Bleak, you say??

I am very consistently bleak on this. https://twitter.com/tzemingdynasty/status/1153064543846670337
