The #yxe official community plan OCP goes to Council on Monday. It brings together many of the significant planning documents of the last ten years into a collective long-term vision and policy framework for the city.
The plan describes a city for people which is sustainable, affordable, inclusive and multimodal with an emphasis on providing a high level of quality of life for #yxe citizens.
And while the plan should really be read in its entirety to understand the interconnectedness of the components, I've pulled out some of my favorite snippets in this thread.
My favorite line by far is this one that leaves the door open for parking maximums! We've got a long way to go in terms of senior level admin and community buy-in, but it's a long-term vision and I'm an optimist.
"A sustainable community is one that meets its needs today without limiting the ability of future generations to meet their needs."
The plan recognizes that gradually increasing density is key in developing a sustainable city.
The city centre is the heart of the community. It's the hub of art, entertainment and commerce. The @RemaiModern, a planned new Central @stoonlibrary and new arena will draw more people and development to the city's core.
Need a bunch of work on this one. Hopefully this becomes a priority and shows up in the city's budget.
Encouraging new development to support mobility.
Infilling missing sidewalks has recently scored the highest in a proposed prioritization of planned transportation projects for the city. I would add retrofitting existing sidewalks to have barrier free ramps at all corners to the top of that list.
I wonder if this plan had been adopted earlier if the work to Idylwyld bridge would include a wider sidewalk than proposed. Even more important during a pandemic.
Lots of other gems in there. If our community follows thorough on even half these policies, saskatoon will be an amazing city as it grows to 500k. Congrats to the staff who put this together.
And a huge shoutout to the thousands of citizens who committed their time and energy to contribute through public engagement to all of the plans that form the foundation for this document.
This is a city that I want to grow old in. #yxe
