May 23, 1967: @GOtransit begins running commuter trains between Oakville and Pickering, with @unionstationTO as its operational hub. The Government of Ontario had spent $8 million on 8 diesel locomotives, 40 coaches and 9 self-propelled cars for the service. 1/3
Another $16 million went toward track upgrades, signals, stations and other facilities. GO owned the trains but CN supplied operating crews. GO's new Willowbrook maintenance facility was in an old CN freight car repair depot at Mimico, eight miles west of Union Station. 2/3
The first GO Transit train left Oakville at 5:50 AM with Ontario Premier John Robarts on board to welcome passengers. Within three months, GO was carrying 15,000 passengers a day, 50% higher than its original projected ridership. 3/3
