Being a fauji brat, he was born in Jodhpur Military Hospital on 24th May 1968 where his father Subedar Rulia Ram Walia was posted. Few year later he joined SAINIK SCHOOL Sujanpur.

He was in the First batch of who pass out frm Sainik school Sujanpur and was lucky enough to get selected in NATIONAL DEFENCE ACADEMY PUNE.

Later he joined INDIAN MILITARY ACADEMY, Dehradun as a gentleman cadet and on 23rd June 1988 ,he was commissioned in 4 JAT as second Lieutenant.

Just after getting commissioned he was deputed to Srilanka to fight LTTE as a part of Indian peace keeping force. Back then ,IPKF fought numerous battle against LTTE & suffered around 1200 soldiers killed in action and many wounded .

When he came back he decided to serve Special Force and later Joined 9Para SF.
He did many operations in J&K and in one such Ops he was awarded SENA MEDAL.
He served TWO six month stint to siachen - highest & Harshest Battlefield.

On 1997, He was selected amongst the best of India's commandos and sent for specialized course to THE UNITED STATE. When the Six-month course ended, Maj Walia was the only INDIAN SOLDIER in the group of 80 countries to topped it. "COLONEL"was his nickname there.

Later was deputed as Aide-De-Camp to the chief of Army staff @Vedmalik1 and by then was decorated bar to SENA MEDAL for combating terrorist.
"He set an Example to and inspired young officer", says General Malik who admired hm a lot

When KARGIL WAR broke he was on deputation to the Army Chief and his 9PARA was fighting with the enemy, he was desperate to join his Unit and somehow managed to do .And once again Major found himself amongst the best Soldiers to capture ZULU RIDGE.

When kargil war ended, 9 PARA was again assigned to what they were good at it in J&k and again Maj sudhir walia opted for anti terrorist Operations.
