The tradition is called Winding stream party 曲水流觞 popularized by Chinese calligrapher, writer and statesman Wang Xizhi 王羲之 who in 353 AD invited 42 literati friends gathered in 蘭亭 writing poems before their cup of rice wine flow down to them in a winding stream.
