Lots of questions about natural or non-chemical ways to repel wasps. I have no solutions other than frequent inspections of usual/favorite nesting places each week & knockdown nest in high traffic areas.
I like wasps but in places where we spend a lot of time, a wasp nest that will only become more populated will not be good. For paper wasps, I find the fmeailenwill always come back to rebuild in the same location, so I knock down her nest weekly.
Sometimes I end up collecting her & taking her on tv for educational purposes. She doesn’t get to live, but nobody human gets stung.
Today went I went to check the spot where the European paper wasp has been working & this northern paper wasp crossed my path to collect pulp for her paper nest. Paper wasps build a single tier comb that hangs from a petiole/stalk like an umbrella.
My sister in Ontario, Canada sent picture of a paper wasp constructing nest under the same overhang as a yellowjacket. She said she’s never seen so many of each type of wasps before at home & at weekend bunkie. It was a mild winter & nice transition into spring #wasps
Yellowjackets can build aerial nests, underground nests or find a place indoors through a hole in the wall. They have multiple-tiers surrounded in a paper envelope (also made from pulp from weathered wood, lumber, mulch, etc).
Adult wasps may be seen feeding on flowers like bees. Yellowjackets are also scavengers of meats and sweets later in the season.
