Jesus actually ends up doing everything the devil encourages him to do at the temptation, but he does it when he wants and the way he wants. He miraculously creates a meal, but for thousands of others, not himself.
He says angels could stop his death, but instead of escaping death, he dies and rises from the dead to offer life to the world. And, he does assert his kingship over the whole world but by the cross, the empty tomb, and his ascension to the throne.
