[sakusa x hinata, omihina; long]

he thinks about him all the time.

at first, he was with someone else. a rival for hoshiumi. a demon for kageyama. a copy of bokuto. someone who can keep atsumu under control.

but somewhere along the line, those thoughts changed.
now it’s side eyeing him as he gets changed. he pulls off his shirt and sakusa’s throat goes dry. their hands brush up against each other and his brain short-circuits. he’s always available for outings now-

...just so long as they involve Him.
if anyone notices these new subtle differences, they don’t mention it.

it brings him great comfort that nobody’s talking about this, because it means that atsumu and bokuto absolutely don’t know.

they’d probably be screaming it from the rooftops if they did.
there’s something about hinata that’s different to atsumu and bokuto. bokuto is just as loud as hinata, but he’s not interested in that energetic owl.

hinata has a hunger for the game that he’s only seen in atsumu. still, he’s not interested in the setter either.
he’s enchanting, like something right out of a fairytale. he’s a prince. a hero.

but most importantly, he’s a thief.

sakusa has never experienced a crush before, but this has to be it. it’s the only way to explain the flutter in his chest and the light feeling in his head.
but this is also the problem.

hinata is on the starting lineup. he practices hard. he’s learnt how to do everything.

he’s learnt how to set, receive, spike and invade his dreams. he’s infecting his thoughts.

and for once in his life, sakusa can’t do anything about it.
hinata picks up the sun’s slack and makes up for its weaknesses. he practices for hours on end, for far longer than any man should be able to.

atsumu is always able to accommodate him. sakusa can’t even figure out how to smile at him without letting everyone know how he feels.
but as it turns out, he doesn’t need to worry- because akaashi keiji is standing by his car after practice. it’s raining. he has an umbrella. akaashi came prepared, just like him.

“bokuto told me everything.”

“told you what?”
it seems like he’s being nice, but sakusa is just calculating the fastest way to end this. after all, it’s cold and wet.

“i’ll keep it short. bokuto knows about your one-sided thing with hinata.”

his blood runs cold. that has to be a lie. how could he possibly know?

“what?”
“your one-sided thing,” akaashi repeats, slowly, “with hinata. crush. pining habits. whatever.”

the ex-setter waves his hand, clearly unconcerned with all the little details.

“apparently you’re not as secret as you think. wouldn’t know. i’m not on your team.”
“i don’t have any feelings for that mandarin, thank you very much,” sakusa lies, wondering how he’s going to push the man aside so he can go home.

“the blush on your face is very convincing.” there’s a slight smile on akaashi’s face. “oh, maybe it’s just the light.”
he scowls. “what do you want?”

“nothing much. just confess so that bokuto stops squealing about every little thing you do. it takes a lot of time out of my day.”

just confess? how could he make that seem so easy?

“impossible. we’re complete opposites.”
the man tilts his head a little, thinking about this. “but you’re standing here, absolutely in love with him. is it so hard to believe that he might fall for you too?”

“yes.” there’s nothing redeemable about him. he hates germs. he rarely has a smile. what could hinata like?
“i think he might like you because you’re so similar to him.”

sakusa barks out a laugh. that’s the dumbest thing he’s ever heard.

“you both love volleyball enough to go pro, you’re both as sharp as the winter wind- oh yeah. and you both can’t stop staring at each other.”
everyone else has already left. it’s quiet, except for the rain and the sound of balls bouncing around inside. they’ll stay there till dark. atsumu will probably drive hinata home, make a move even...

it’s too late for him, no matter what the others say.
“apparently, hinata doesn’t shut up about how gorgeous and perfect you are.”

akaashi steps aside so he can finally (finally!) get in his car.

“but hey, i’m only the messenger. believe me or not, i don’t care. bokuto’s just tired of all this back and forth.”
yeah, bokuto. that’s right. “how does he know all this stuff, hm?”

akaashi smiles mysteriously and doesn’t answer. the rain starts to get harder.

“go back inside, sakusa. tell him how you feel. tomorrow’s saturday, so it’s not like you have to see him again for a while.”
“life is short,” he calls, walking off. “it’ll be better this way.”

he’d be drenched if it wasn’t for his own umbrella, but it doesn’t save him from the cold. he watches the figure get smaller and smaller until it finally disappears, and he can’t help but look at the gym.
he’s right.

despite everything telling him otherwise, akaashi is right. no matter the outcome today, it will be better this way.

so he locks his car again and turns around. he doesn’t believe that hinata’s always singing his praises, but he can at least get this off his chest.
“omi-san, you’re back!” hinata’s excited voice is followed by a missed spike and silence.

“i thought you had somewhere to be,” atsumu finally says, trying to bring back his trademark smirk.

“i do,” sakusa answers. “it’s here.”

he takes a deep breath, trying to calm himself.
bokuto’s eyes are wide. he takes a moment to glare at him.

“hinata? i really like you.”

the trademark smirk drops. it feels too soon to say love, but he has to wonder if hinata will take it the wrong way.

“when you say really like,” bokuto jumps in, “do you mean like like?”
“what does that-“

“i really like you too,” hinata interrupts, a big smile on his face. “i didn’t actually know it was possible to get a crush this fast! we have to be soulmates or something, right?”

his brain blanks out for a second as he tries to make sense of it all.
soulmates? sounds nice.

“yeah. soulmates.”

“wait, shouyou,” atsumu suddenly says. “how do you know that’s the kind of like he meant?”

hinata rubs the back of his neck nervously. “well, bokuto was kind of hinting at it for ages, so i just assumed-”

“bokuto, you KNEW?”
the man grins. that’s the face of someone who doesn’t regret anything. “of course i knew! don’t worry though, i didn’t tell anyone!”

he pauses.

“except for akaashi. and hoshiumi.”

“why did HOSHIUMI have to know?!”

hinata beams at him. “are you doing anything tomorrow night?”
“no,” sakusa answers, distracted as hinata’s hand brushes up against his.

“so come over to my apartment! i learnt some great dishes over in brazil. swear you’ll like them.”

“what if i come for you and not the food?” he finds himself saying.

hinata laughs. “I’d like that too.”
