Been thinking about a conversation I had with my dad as a child and how it affected me for years and years to come afterwards and how thinking about that conversation now affects me as an adult going forwards.
The conversation was after I had finished learning about the Vikings at primary school and went a little something like this:
Me: what's your favourite thing about the Vikings?
Dad: idk, I learnt about the Vikings at school but I forgot all about it. You will forget all about it too when you are older.
And for a while I did (because I had to learn about other things?? Or because I was told to forget??)
Anyway years later at college I did eventually study history. Modern history. Because at home I'd been taught that modern history was the only history worth studying. It was extremely interesting and I don't regret it but...
Now, I'm an adult. And I still fucking love learning about the Vikings. I love learning everything I can about them and I wish that it was my job to research them or to teach others about them. But I was told as a child to forget about them...
Idk this is a stupid thread but I know that if ever in the future I have children I would like to do my utmost to learn about something they are interested in and support their interest rather than tell them it's just a phase and that my interests are more important/valid.
I'll probably delete this thread later but yeah.
