Today I saw two acts of hate on my otherwise perfect bike ride. One was directed towards me. One was in passing. I’ll share them here. THREAD/RANT
I was stopped at a red light when a man (petulant child?) in a lifted truck, TWO LANES OVER, felt the need to roll down his window and yell

“You look like a HOMO”

at me. Which, unfortunately, is not that rare for us spandex wearing cyclists.
I can only presume that my admittedly AWESOME matching sparkly purple bike + purple kit #triggered this person. I fought the urge to yell “Sorry about your penis” or “you look like you have a small dick” or something similar. Decided to just yell back “THANKS!”
Because, let’s be honest, I don’t really know why he thought calling me a “homo” was an insult. Some of the raddest, kindest, most awesome, compassionate people I know are gay. Which are things no one can say about Lifted Truck Man. Sorry your life is full hate and misery LTM.
About an hour later, I came across this racist graffiti on Skyline Blvd, maybe 0.5 miles after turning off Summit Rd. Which, as a Jewish man, is never fun to see. Btw, @CaltransHQ @CHP_HQ can we PLEASE get this cleaned up??
Luckily I was able to use my bicycle to ride off my anger. Not everyone is lucky enough to have such an outlet. Sending virtual hugs to those that need one today.
Because, now of all times, is not the time for hate. Not that it’s ever the time for hate...

Now is the time for love.
Now is the time for compassion.
Now is the time to build each other up.
Now is the time for empathy.
