I have this old issue with Cummings. From interviews we did about the disapplication of ICT and introduction of Computer Science in English schools in 2012-13, it seems he was central in changing the nature of any technology education for children. The result?
Well, now we have far fewer girls studying any kind of technology subject in school. Or children of ethnic minority groups. So computing in schools has become even more white boy-centric. Thanks Dom. Also...
Introducing computer science as a school subject massively empowered tech sector influence in public education. Eric Schmidt disparaged British tech education publicly. Google advice got to Gove. Codecademy said it "struck oil". Osborne announced "Year of Code". And...
Code Club& #39;s founder was forced to resign after criticising its corporate sponsors for "mass surveillance". Then later Cummings got young weirdos with CompSci skills to run a government, and planned an ARPA dept to govern by AI. This was what curriculum reform aimed to do. So...
I won& #39;t be travelling 400 miles to see my parents any time soon, but I do hope Cummings leaves No10 soon. The damage to education is enough for me.
If you& #39;re bothered too, here& #39;s my understanding of how computing and Cummings got into the curriculum. https://mirandanet.ac.uk/blog/2017/09/02/coding-lessons-computing-curriculum/">https://mirandanet.ac.uk/blog/2017...

Just to be clear, if Cummings was as involved in getting computing into the curriculum, and powering up the learning to code movement in UK as I believe he was, this was part of concerted effort to produce new computational operatives to support "digital government" aspirations.
"Learning to code" sounded so empowering but was and is a conservative political project. Look how shitty it& #39;s turned out.
Anyway, this paper is 5 years old but detailed this stuff with no idea of the right wing computational governance horror to follow. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/19460171.2015.1052003">https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/...
