Thread remebering the sacrifices and suffering of many Iranians during the devastating Iran-Iraq war during the anniversary of the liberation of Khorramshahr. https://twitter.com/dehgani1/status/1245115722302357504
Celebrations at the moment of liberation. This invasion- backed and aided by the worlds powers-left a mark on Iranian national conciusness. In this fight against these powers Iran finally gained sovereignty- after coups and invasions before hand had ripped it away.
The newspaper announcing liberation. This war and the effects of it are not nearly studied enough outside Iran considering the influence such countries had on the war by aiding Iraq. It is so so key to understanding Iran and yet it is not treated in this way outside Iran.
Comparisons between the moment of liberation with the modern day. This occasion marked a moment of true independence for Iran and became seen as a sign that for once, Iran was not going to be defeated in their independence no matter what is placed onto them.
Posters and art about the war and Khorramshahr. The liberation and the war itself are, I will stress again, monumental in modern Iranain history.
Jewish Iranians remebering the martyrs during a ceremony. Many ethnic and religious groups fought in this war and are remembered in Iran also.
Also to stress the many others who suffered in this war, most notably the Kurds in Halabja who were gassed by Saddam at the end of the war. May their suffering and those who allowed for it to happen never be forgotten. Photos from a mourning ceremony of the attack 30 years on.
This thread is monumentally short of so many details around this war- I tried originally to make it much much longer but I realised it would be much better and more efficient to write something without word restrictions. Forgive me if the thread has not been informative enough.
All I was trying to state was that the war needs to be taught more as it is so key to modern Iran. I hope that was at least clear. Many speak on Iran for a career with calls for regime change and invasions and brush over such history with ease.
Having a large extended family, many of my relatives fought in the war. Some of the martyrs I have known my whole life, some I have had to uncover as their loss was a very painful one- this is a photo of one of my Dad’s cousins and a good friend of his who was lost.
