If I were to be asked about confessionalism to me my answer would be:
Confessionalism = A manipulative governmental system, hiding corruption, faking equality and coexistence, and most importantly promoting a national delusion about our economy and wellbeing. [1/15]
In this thread, I will be briefly explaining:
1.The origins of confessionalism in Lebanon.
2.Why is it a bad idea in general?
3.Why would our government stick to it?
4.A glimpse into each reason.
5.The negative impact on the Lebanese society. [2/15]
Confessionalism has been used in lebanon since its establishment, based on the fundamental role & significance of the enduring political impact of the 1932 census in Lebanon which is ironically the last one carried out until now and it’s not even well done. [3/15]
But why is it still in use +100 years later and still affecting us to this day knowing that lebanese demographics have changed? (Several historical proof of changed demographics are available of which for example, the ~100,000 palestinians who fled to Lebanon around 1948). [4/15]
Answer: Demografics is an arm.
In Lebanon, we value a precarious social balance between sectarians. No one would dare to stand up for negotiations which leads to structural changes.
this precarious balance is caused by confessionalism. Thus, the state uses a 1932 census. [5/15]
Although the country’s constitution emphasizes equality between the lebanese in its preamble, state institutions remain sectarian.
Here’s how: [6/15]
1.Citizen rights are based on their religious affiliation.
2.Citizen-state relationships, including personal status are governed by sectarian rather than a civil law for all.
3.The judiciary is ineffective because it’s influenced by interests....
[7/15]
...
4.Political parties are religion based and do not care about national policies.
5.the electoral system is unfair.

Why would our Lebanese Government firmly stick to a confessionalist system?
[8/15]
As I have previously said, Briefly: confessionalism hides crucial state problems related to its economy, politics,& society because it pushes society to debate religious & ethnical matters as each sectarian group will focus on leading his community/Political party to power [9/15]
Thus the citizens priority will no longer be about convictions, reforms efficiency & achievements.
This is also one of the main reasons why we are facing a political immobilization and no valuable enough reform has been made to fix our economy and corruption problem. [10/15]
Point 1: -the constitution states there is no legitimacy for contradictions of coexistence, yet some municipalities forbid rent to certain people because of their religion.
-Some jobs require a certain religion regardless of their achievements/abilities which is unfair [11/15]
Pt 2: Citizens are judged differently based on their religion, in other words to settle matters of personal status for individuals from their respective communities.
(Ecclesiastical courts) [12/15]
Pt 3: Fighting corruption usually starts within courts, but in a confessional regime it’s nearly impossible. As courts are influenced by interests and must satisfy all communities to prevent controversies and disputes between sectarian groups... [13/15]
...basically for every muslim they must also judge a christian to make it seem fair when it’s actually not fair.
(That’s all if they weren’t already politicized and handpicked by governors which is not the case here) [14/15]
Problem is, a sectarian identity is used to justify a discriminatory system that remains prone to corruption, foreign intervention and continuous cycles of violence among the citizens. #SaveLebanon
