Every leader of the Catholic and Royal Army of the Vendee was either executed or KIA. Generalissimo Cadoudal was the final leader of this great army. He was executed on June 25, 1804.

d'Elbée, a predecessor to Cadoudal, saved Republican soldiers from execution. Before his men tried to execute them he commanded them to pray the Lord’s Prayer. As they said “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who have trespassed against us” d’Elbée

cried out “Do not lie to God”. His man were shaken by this, and they put their weapons down.

He was executed by firing squad on 6 January 1794

The great Generalissimo Rochejaquelein, at the battle of Cholet cried out, “Mes amis, si j'avance, suivez-moi! Si je recule, tuez-moi! Si je meurs, vengez-moi!” Which means, “Friends, if I advance, follow me! If I retreat, kill me! If I die, avenge me!"

He would die 28 January 1794 at the age of 21. He was shot and killed by a Republican soldier who feigned surrender.

François Athanase de Charette was known as the “King of the Vendee”. He was the successor to Rochejaquelein. “You cannot make an omelette without cracking eggs.” Was his defense against charges of rebellion. His army was ultimately defeated while defending a convent.

He signed a treaty with the National Assembly granting freedom of religion, but the Republicans reneged their consent to the treaty. He was executed on 29 March 1796 at Nantes.

The Vendee was only one part of a multi-front uprising against the Jacobins and the new atheistic state. Met with brutality and harshness, the Catholic and Royal Army fought for several years. Their bravery was recognized by Louis XVIII on his ascension to the throne.

In a way, there was almost a sense of revenge carried by the Sanfedisti on behalf on the various Catholic and Royal armies of the French countryside. Something worth thinking about.
