Rewatched The Watermelon Woman (1996) last night, it’s such a joy every time. A brilliant lesson in turning the lens on oneself, writing oneself into history w/ humility, honoring those who’ve paved way for you. Nobody pays homage like Black n queer folk. Thank you, Cheryl

The forged archives are still one of the most impressive parts of the film to me. Shout out to Zoe Leonard.
As Pride nears, The Watermelon Woman (1996) grounds me like no other. I can’t help but reiterate how proud and honored I am to be a Black queer (filmmaker!) nigga and apart of such an inherently unique, beautiful legacy.
