In 2016 Hillary Clinton became the first woman nominee. She called out white supremacy and structural racism and misogyny. Democrats should have fought for her and for the equity she promised in her administration--reflecting her staff of 50% women, 50% BIPOC.

Democrats had the opportunity in 2020 to fix what they broke in 2016 and vote for a black woman nominee who would break that 244yr gender divide. Instead they chose the oldest white man in history. Some say it doesn't matter who he chooses for VP--all the women are superb.
2/
And it is true that all the women being vetted are accomplished and stellar. But the VP must be a black woman for reasons that go beyond simple résumé: Only a black woman VP will break the back of white supremacy AND gender supremacy--a white woman can only do half that.

Women have waited in America for 244yrs to be recognized. In 2016 some women dared to claim that representation was irrelevant; internalized misogyny is that deeply embedded. But black women voted 94% for Hillary; THEY KNEW Everyone left of center should know by now. EVERYONE.

The misogyny that attended every article or column I wrote about Hillary in 2015/2016 shocked me. I had faced misogyny throughout my life as a journalist, but this was out of control and threatening. Hillary provoked real fear in men (& some women)--she'd break the status quo.

Stop dismissing 51.5% of the population--women. Our best Democratic candidate in 2020 was Kamala Harris, as I first wrote in January 2017. Folks who want her now (out of buyer's remorse) should have been donating to her throughout 2019. And now Biden may take them for granted.

Some people are content with Biden as nominee. I am not. He is too old, too centrist, has a very limited vision for the future, goes in damaged by being a one-termer. So the 2020 VP matters. And she MUST be a black woman. Harris. Susan Rice. Stacey Abrams. Val Deming.

Biden's latest gaffe (for which he apologized)was honest: White Democrats expect black (& brown)Dems to fall in line. Rarely stated is they also expect women to fall in line. In 2016 Hillary was right when she said it was revolutionary to choose a woman. VOTERS did; EC didn't.

Dem strategists have told me "this race issue" is not that vital. A couple have told me "statistically" Latinx are a larger minority, thus more critical to consider. But while black Americans are only 13% of the population, they are 40% of the Dem electorate. PAY ATTENTION.

Charlamagne Tha God said Friday on CNN that black women are over-qualified to be VP. Exactly. Over-qualified as they should/could be the nominee. But structural racism and misogyny have blocked that path. The time is now: Biden can do this. He can change history. And must.
