If you're interested in misinformation on WhatsApp, check out our study (w/ @profjsg @EricaAnita @vanessaveiga) in the "Sharing (mis)information" #ica_pol @poli_com panel! #ica20
We investigate the predictors of accidental and purposeful dysfunctional sharing on WhatsApp and Facebook and we find further support for a participation "paradox" -- sharing misinformation is associated with "good" participation, eg political talk, exposure to diverse opinions
We also investigate the role of social corrections - being corrected, correcting others, and witnessing corrections - and find that those are significantly more common on WhatsApp than on Facebook -- perhaps due to conversations being private and among closer ties
Alarmingly (but not surprisingly), using WhatsApp and Facebook for news is associated with dysfunctional sharing 🤦‍♀️. To end with a silver lining, misinformation does not go unnoticed and people are likely to be called out when they post false stuff, particularly on WhatsApp
Finally, this paper is now in press -- DM/email me if you're interested!
