Warning — The Upcoming Thread is Blatantly Sentimental and Contains Spoilers for the TV Show LOST:
Ten years ago today, the series finale of LOST aired. A lot has been written about it. Some positive, some negative.
While I don’t think the final season is without flaws, I always felt the last episode stuck the landing in more ways than the program's outspoken detractors would have you believe. Given the recent state of the world, I’ve been thinking a lot about the series and its ending.
Through all the hatches, smoke monsters, flashbacks, flashforwards, and flash-sideways, LOST was fundamentally a show about broken souls who find grace and forgiveness through community. Its last few minutes represent a perfect distillation of this theme.
After all is said and done, we leave on the image of a man, once selfishly addicted to a pathological savior complex, having selflessly given his life and become an actual savior.
Though mortally wounded and dying, he spends his final moments taking comfort in the knowledge that his friends are safe and the world’s most adorable dog is there to keep him company as he awaits his final rest. Like his fellow castaways, he once was lost but now is found.
To this day, it’s nearly impossible for me to watch these images, with Michael Giacchino’s emotional gut-punch of a score, and not tear up. I really liked the episode when it first aired and, revisiting it ten years later, I now love it.
As a TV fan and writer, LOST and the countless people who contributed to its 6 seasons have given me more than I could ever hope to repay; today, felt the least I could do was express my appreciation for this ambitious, sincere show with an equally ambitious, sincere “thank you.”
