portal is inarguably one of the best games that has ever come out, many people say, and almost everyone over 16 has played it. but why has it completely disappeared from the internet's cognition? i love portal, but i only see posts about it once a blue moon. in this essay i will

in 2018 i got some of my friends to think about it for a while, but that didnt stick. i dont even see wheatley mentioned as a tumblr twink. but WHY?
valve, the company that made portal, has a lot of old gemstones that were ICONIC in their time, but today nobody mentions them.

half life, dota, whatever. valve has stopped making games many years ago and all of these games have not received a crumb of official content for ages, but that doesnt matter. many currently active fandoms havent.

lets take the man in my pfp for an example: N is extremely popular, and pokemon is still ongoing, but N himself hasnt appeared in official content (aside from a few drawings) in 8 years! yet his fans are still going strong, and even got him to win a popularity contest last year!

so why hasnt portal gotten the same treatment? portal 2 came out 9 years ago, with its fandom peak around 2012-2014 from what i know, but after that it hardly got anything. lets try to figure out why:

fandom these days is... really fast. we consume content like netflix shows all at once, talk about it A LOT for a few days/weeks/months, but after that not much. same with memes. memes used to last months or years, but around 2016 a meme's lifespan became a few days.

i think portal suffered from this phenomenon greatly: without even a crumb of content to its fans for many years, people slowly moved on to new things and produced content for them instead of portal. and others followed until there was nothing left. it happens to many things

but... many of those things make a comeback. scenecore was gone for over a decade before being brought back around a year or two ago. many modern scenecore fans today werent even alive for the original wave! so what made portal fall and not come back (yet)?

that, i do not know. i think it could be bc even though its very good, everything that couldve been said about it was said already. people are just bored and none of their friends like it anyway. theyre alone and nobody cares, so they shoudlnt even bother.

most fandoms that were revived recently got remakes for the originals and stuff, but that probably wont happen to portal lol. portal is an amazing game and it impacted me and many others greatly, but i cant say i think about it often. i should, though. i highly recommend it
