Beyond the obvious dignity of life rift between the pro-choice crowd and the Catholic Church, there is a second rift that is forming between the two. The dignity of suffering. Let me explain.
The Catholic Church holds a particular dignity to suffering that is not found in the rest of the world, even in other Christian cultures. Modern comfort and general hedonism have lead to the understanding that suffering is bad.
In Christian churches this has manifested as the "prosperity Gospel," or the idea that those loyal to God will be virtually untouchable by hardship and suffering.
But this is not the opinion of the Catholic Church, who asserts that to join oneself to Christ is to willingly share in His suffering.
Because of this, we have a modern, secular pro-choice crowd who try to justify the sins of murder by (sometimes) asserting that it is better to die than suffer. The reason that Catholic's cannot understand this line of reasoning is because to a Catholic, suffering is a blessing.
If it was better to die than to suffer, then Jesus would have commended His spirit up to the Father in the garden before the guards seized Him. If it was better to die than to suffer, then one should rather die than become a Catholic, because to be a Catholic is to suffer.
This is why when the pro-choice crowd suggests abortion as a solution to children with diseases and disabilities, Catholics are horrified. Because to live in a meaningful way means to suffer, so to assert that one should die rather than suffer is to turn all life over to death.
I know that this thread probably wont reach many pro-choice ears but I hope this helps you understand why we can never accept that line of reasoning. Yes, we disagree on human value, but we also disagree on the dignity of suffering.
