After much thought, I don't think what the alt-right was trying to do ever made sense

The modern conservative movement was founded to return America to classical liberalism. Libertarianism is an even more fundamentalist version of liberalism

These people are oriented toward individualism, selfishness and materialism. Their political ideology is defined by their view that liberalism and free-market capitalism are great things. In their view, the "liberals" see it otherwise

There is no room in this liberal worldview for collective structures (nation, race, culture, family, ethnic group) or collective goods (public health, environment) that aren't purely voluntary because the individual is the basis of everything

The ideology of the mainstream Right is a solvent that erodes and destroys all these things over time. They give lip service to the family, the country and Christianity, but their true religion is liberalism, which they believe should be the basis of the social order

How can you preserve faith, family or folk under a liberal framework? You can't. It is impossible. You can't "preserve" a culture, an ethnic majority, a faith without violating liberal ideology. The market chews up and dissolves all of these things

Ultimately, the logic of conservative liberalism and libertarianism reduces the entire world to economics and people to deracinated individualists and consumers. The reopening protests have been a stark illustration of this

This is why the alt-right project was doomed to fail. You preach a collective identity, reverence for the past, concern for future generations. They accuse you of socialism and identity politics!

The fundamental disconnect is the failure of conservative liberals and libertarians to see anything beyond the Self. Beyond their rights and liberties as individualists. Any type of collective higher good. They don't see themselves as having an ethnic identity or culture

The alt-right and conservative liberalism and libertarianism are on different wavelengths. Joining the latter and empowering them in politics ... produces what?

Are a bunch of selfish individualists and materialists going to, say, suddenly reverse course and preserve the White race? No, they are going to cut taxes and regulations and cater to business interests because generally they celebrate liberalism and free-market capitalism

Getting "immigration reform" out of these people is futile. Strong borders is a collective good. It runs against the grain of selfishness, individualism, materialism and capitalism. Inevitably, powerful business interests always win out after elections

Go down the list. "Family values" is a dog whistle. "Christianity" is another. The logic of a liberal society shreds and destroys both. The autonomous individual is "liberated" from these structures along with their nation, race, culture, ethnic group, etc
