‘Tony Slattery turns to psychiatry to find some answers to his psychological problems.’

Which sounds like turning to a plumber to find some answers to your electrical problems, and is exactly what is wrong with this programme.

‘I don’t want to put words in your mouth.’, says the psychiatrist, following six consecuitive questions of doing exactly that. Worrying that the seventh was the first he noticed.....
‘Just exactly how you feel Tony’..........

..........but on this seven point scale of feelings that I have written for you.
Jeez. To go and see the leading expert and be asked questions read straight from a standard checklist, and find someone who can’t seem to see that one anaesthetic may have replaced another...
At the heart of this documentary is the fantastical search for an underlying cause that can only be found through the neo-liberal lens of the individually located, internal medical disorder.
And it is a radio interviewer, not the world’s leading expert on ‘bipolar disorder’, who has read @DrGaborMate.
Abuse, trauma, shame, guilt, secrecy, smashed trust, living in hiding, self annihilation. Heartbreaking.

But nice little telling off from the psychiatrist about not filling in his little electronic form to turn up the guilt and re-enact the abuse dynamic.

Nice work doc!
‘People like us think that your view of why you drink is wrong. You think it’s a solution, but we think it’s the problem.’

Good to see that disbelieving the experience of others is still alive and well at the very highest levels of psychiatric treatment.
God that was a hard watch. I really struggle to understand how a team with the undoubted research capabilities of #Horizon could up have come up with such a linear, shallow and monotheistic program as this.

I wish so much better for you than this Tony. Good luck, take care.
