I joined civil services in 2006. During our training in Lahore our first few lectures were delivered by experts on Finance and Economics. The PM Shaukat Aziz had given a motto to the Privatization Board that "It's not Govt's business to be in Business ".
Privatization Program of the public sector organizations was a success. Growth rate jumped to 8.6 % and inflation dropped to 3.5%. Govt was successful in privatizing Banks and PTCL. Since then their tax revenue and service delivery has improved manyfolds.
On the other hand due to stronger lobbies, judicial interventions, politics and bureaucratic incompetence Govt was unable to privatize PIA, Railways and Steel Mills. We have lost hundreds of precious lives and more than 1 trillion rupees on these organizations.
These orgs are providing jobs to many but their service delivery is below average. The HR here is allegedly marred by corruption, nepotism and jobbery. Any further delay in privatizing them will bankrupt the federal kitty. The country can't sustain them like this
Extraordinary times demand extraordinary decisions. We must not let tax payers money go waste in inefficiencies. Bureaucrats generally are against privatization but the losses we are incurring here are tremendous. It would be profoundly unfair now to object to Privatization.
