This might become a thread so here goes,
The problem with most and nearly all those people in Kashmir and those based outside Kashmir who organise events and shows in Kashmir is that, they only consider musicians and artists to be worth providing a platform in the name of (1/10)
culture and promoting talent in Kashmir. And it's not all kind of musicians and artists either. But let's talk about other kind of arts we have. I'll obviously start with humour. How many standup comics you know about, how many open mics are there entirely for comics? (2/n)
I've seen hundreds of open mics, talent hunts, events, and other kinds of platforms for musicians and artists to perform at. Comics hardly get any chance to perform, and I'll tell you how these so called open mics are only destroying careers of aspiring comics (3/n)
A comic, unlike a musician, painter, or even a poet, cannot just write a joke and perform it. A joke needs to be tested at various open mics before altering, modifying and finalising. But with no such open mics for comics, they can only perform at events which are (4/10)
hosted for other artists, and then he has to perform his joke without ever trying it out, not knowing if it'll land it not, and when it doesn't, the horror of bombing in front of a crowd on your first attempt will make anyone give up. In comparison to a comic, (5/10)
I'll tell you how easy it is for a musician to perform.
Firstly, they don't even need to have their own songs, you have no idea how big an advantage this is for them. They can practice wherever and can even post their videos online to get feedback and (6/10)
then can perform the very same song in front of a live audience. Because no one minds listening to a song over and over again. My point is how hard a comic has to work to come up with a joke and how shitty the comic scene in Kashmir is for any comic (7/10)
But then to add to the miseries, these "platform providers" host culture and whatnot events inviting musicians who have never even composed a song on their own. Essentially portraying music is the only talent Kashmiris have.
There's a lot more I can add but (8/10)
This topic is so wide I can't completely express myself in tweets. But let's just say my point for this thread was to tell people how underrated comics are, and how people with far less talent than some comics have easy access to fame, growth and whatnot, that a comic (9/10)
can only wish for.
I guess my point is, if you're doing a cultural show, may be have a diverse range of artists in the performers list. There are talented people other than musicians too. If you're building a platform, look for those who need that platform. (10/10)
