I am here to tell you all that BEWITCHED (2005) is a good film, and here are all the reasons why (a thread):
FIRST OFF: THAT CAST. Are you KIDDING me with that cast??? Will, Nicole, Jason, Steve, Stephen, Shirley, Kristen, MICHAEL CAINE??? You couldn't get a hotter early-2000s line-up if you TRIED.
SECOND: The plot is meta humor at its finest. It's not only once-meta, it's TWICE-META, positing a movie remake of a tv remake of a classic show, and casting an actual witch in the role of a witch. It's so layered that people don't realize how complicated it was to pull off.
Nicole Kidman is giving us naïve in a way that I have never seen played before. Isabelle Bigalow walked so Princess Giselle could run. The way that Nicole discovers new emotions in this film is genius, right down to her surprise at getting angry, and pacing to expel tension.
Will Ferrell plays Will Ferrell in almost every film except this one and Stranger Than Fiction, which came out the next year. He plays so many different versions of the same guy in this film, IN SUCCESSION, that it's no wonder he's a movie star.
The supporting cast is so impeccably organized, it's astounding. Michael Caine has very few lines but eats them LIKE A FEAST. A chuckle from Michael Caine is like an entire monologue's work for another actor. The genius is that there is NO EXPLANATION for their family tree.
Shirley MacLaine is ANOTHER META LAYER in this film, encouraging Isabelle to hide her powers, but also possessing powers of her own? It's like this movie is playing a joke on itself and I am here for it.
Jason Schwartzman, when pulled away from the world of Wes Anderson, still plays things so straight and honestly it hurts. We've all known this agent/manager. There's a way that he delivers made up words like "Jackerator" that bring me to tears.
This film is one of the best representations of female friendship in the early-2000s canon. Kristen Chenoweth and Heather Burns are not only supportive of Isabelle, but have a friendship of their own. The movie passes the Bechdel Test in the FIRST CONVERSATION between two women.
There are jokes in this film that just WORK. At one point Isabelle posits that lots of people like eating duck, and the honesty with which Jack delivers, "You know what? No, they don't," is so clean, I LAUGH EVERY TIME.
Another joke that JUST WORKS is in a sequence where Jack goes on Inside The Actors Studio and blames the wardrobe department for the failure of his last film. James Lipton also gives a wonderful performance.
THE WARDROBE of this film is so on point, that I'm shocked it's a comedy. At one point, Nicole Kidman is dressed in a long multi-layered tulle skirt that is so attractive to the eye, I want to wear one everywhere. Additionally, the early-2000s sunnies are perfect on Schwartzman.
Back to the cast: STEVE CARELL gives one of the most thoughtful homage performances as Uncle Arthur I have ever seen. Only Steve Carell can say things like, "Is it 'Porsh' or is it 'Porsha'?" and make me laugh.
David Alan Grier is a National Treasure, and gives a straight man performance in this that is so clean and concise, it must be applauded. No one can talk down to people in such a compassionate AND judgmental way.
Stephen Colbert and Jim Turner as the show runners are the perfect pair. Stephen Colbert throws more into a one word line like, "No," than most people do with an entire scene.
LET'S TALK NORA EPHRON. She was a queen (we all know that), but the love with which she directed and co-wrote this film is STUNNING. It's clearly a Ephron script, rife with commentary on funny day to day things, and bait-and-switch jokes about the time of day or someone's name.
This script was co-written by her sister, Delia, and you can tell that women were at the helm and heart of this project. They write women as open to learning instead of stupid, as childlike instead of young, and as powerful instead of "bossy", although bossy is a good thing, too.
The special effects in this film are strong and simple. The Bewitched television show didn't need more than reveals and freeze-frames, and that is exactly what you get here. An overworked joke will never work, and the art departments give this design the right finesse.
FINALLY, this film feels good to watch. It's a welcome escape. It doesn't try to be anything other than a cozy-feel, good-time, joke-machine love story, and I can watch it again and again. If you haven't seen Bewitched (2005), I would HIGHLY recommend it.
If any of the following publications want me to turn this into a think-piece, I am FULLY game. @Cosmopolitan @Refinery29 @hellogiggles @vulture @voxdotcom @BuzzFeed
PS - The soundtrack and score are NEXT LEVEL. Everything from Sinatra to Persephone's Bees. It's really good. Shout out to George Fenton for the incredible orchestrations.
