The annual operating cost per HSR bus is $374K, and each bus carries an average of 81K passenger trips a year. That works out to a cost per passenger trip of $4.61. 1/

By comparison, the entire operating cost of Hamilton Bike Share is ~$600,000 - less than the cost of two buses - and it carried 350,000 passenger trips last year - more than four times as many trips as a bus - for an operating cost per passenger trip of $1.71. 2/

That is to say, SoBi is actually an even more cost-effective public transportation mode than transit, which already has large, well-documented net public benefits. 3/

And that's not counting the large public health benefit of more active transportation - more cycling significantly reduces all-causes mortality and makes streets safer for all road users. 4/

Based on the initial cost to deploy the SoBi system (bikes and hubs), the cost to wearhouse it may be $500K - almost an entire year's operation! 5/

Public investment in Sobi makes perfect sense during a time when we're trying to re-open the economy carefully and transit capacity is sharply limited by distancing protocols. 6/6
