Another myth about Shehu Danfodio:

Did he bring Islam to land today called ‘Northern Nigeria’?

(Thread) https://twitter.com/muhammad_m_abba/status/1263953788718788608
1/ Shehu was born in Gobir (Sokoto) 1754, 18th century...

and Shehu himself narrated that he was taught Quran, Hadith, Arabic and books of Maliki fiqh by his parents
2/ Funfact: Shehu’s father, Muhammad’s nickname was “Fodiye”

“Fudaye” in fulfude means a “knower of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence)”

Alot of Muhammad’s relatives were scholars, whom later his sons (Abdullahi & Uthman) will study under...
3/ By the age of 20, the Hausas started calling him “shehu” (sheikh) cos he excelled in islamic knowledge..

He learnt A-Z Islam from his parents and teachers in Gobir and its environs.

His family’s arabic was so fluent, they spoke it alternately with fulfulde at home
The question’s ... If Danfodio brought Islam to ‘Nigeria’, how comes he learnt Islam in ‘Nigeria’?😂

Undoubtedly Shehu is the most influential muslim from our lands but he didn’t islam to Northern Nigeria...

Ok who brought Islam here?
This question doesn’t have a definite answer as Islam came to northern Nigeria over a period of time..

A historical claim suggests the companion of the prophet & Umar khattab’s governor of north Africa, Uqbah bn Nafi’ reached modern day Borno state

As far back as 7th century!
However books of History confirm
in 1370 the Yaji of Kano became the first hausa ruler to convert to Islam..

In 14th century, Fulanis mass-migrated from Senegal river areas, passing through Mali and settled in Northern Nigeria
The Fulanis became racially indistinguishable and made their selves indispensable to the Hausa kings

By becoming part of the devoutly religious and educated elites, This got them to seats of as advisers, Qadis (islamic judges) and Teachers.
In the 15th Century, The King of Kano Umaru abdicated the throne to pursue Islam knowledge in full.

This again shows how an influential force Islam has been in our lands.

Kano became was already a seat for advanced Islamic knowledge.
Let’s go back to Shehu now..

Despite the Hausa rulers accepting Islam they kept mixing it with pre-existing indigenous peganic beliefs and practices

The Bori cult of local spirit for example was still rampant...👇🏻
The Islamic scholars who were mainly Fulani continued to teach and advocate for reforms of the hausa states which they considered Pegan and Corrupt

Three hundred years later, One of their sons, Uthman Danfodio motivated by his reformist ideas started preaching in Gobir
He would criticize the Muslim Hausa Rulers of :

1.Greed,
2 paganism,
3 use of heavy taxation,
4 worshipping fetishes,
5 believing in the power of talismans, divination, conjuring and

6.Violation of Islamic shari’ah standards
Infact in 1802, The king of Gobir who sent Danfodiye on exile (Sarki Yunfa) was once a student of shehu’s Islamic school.

The Jihad of 1804 got rid of those corrupt, semi-peganic leadership and ushered in a leadership based on Quran & Sunnah.
So yes, Most of the kings Danfodiye defeated were Muslims. He revived the religion.

May Allah accept his struggles and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.
Allahumma Ameen🤲🏽
