It is a political advisor’s job to advise and protect their MP, minister, government or party.

It has now become the job of the UK cabinet and Tory MPs to protect a political advisor.

Why?
He’s *just* an advisor. He has no formal role in the party. He’s not elected, even internally. He’s essentially done his job of getting the referendum result, and getting them into power and over the line with Brexit.
He has no loyalty. He’s said atrocious things about the Tory party and Tory MPs before.

His methods are not seen as black magic anymore. They’re known and can be replicated by any amoral sociopath with a media and politics background now.
They could even have him go and still get the benefit of his advice informally, I’m sure.
So why have they rallied to the defence of someone who, by the nature of their position, is politically expendable?

(sorry to be brutal, but all advisors know this. I’ve been one briefly and insisted on it. It’s the job).

What can make it so important to die in a ditch for him?
Exactly. When i went to work for an MEP, I insisted from the start that I’d go at the slightest hint that anything I did or said would damage or embarass him. It’s central to the job that it doesn’t happen, and that you go immediately if it does.
