Starting the day out on a musical thread, that ends with the @discogs #1 selling album for March 2020. We begin with this version of Ordinary Joe from 1970 by the "Iceman" Jerry Butler. Butler was the original lead singer of the Impressions and a solo star. #discogs #NowPlaying
Butler went on to have an honorable 35-year career as a Commissioner in Cook County, Illinois. Ordinary Joe was written by then local Chicago writer Terry Callier. Callier, recorded his own version in in 1972 for his album Occasional Rain. #discogs #terrycallier #NowPlaying
Callier was part of the influential writers workshop in Chicago, and he worked with @EarthWindFire Charles Stepney who produced his 1974 album, Callier tortured with @GBguitar and Gil Scott Heron, by the mid-80's had been dropped by his label. #discogs #terrycallier #NowPlaying
Terry quit the music business to look after his daughter and go back to school to be one a computer programmer, but his music lived on and he became a cult figure in the UK both the northern soul scene and acid jazz in London, via @eddiepiller coaxed Terry out of retirement
And he became really very influential London music scene in his understated, friendly, gentle way. I saw Terry during that period and it's likely that Japanese produced, dj Nujabes did, or was influenced in the same way as #paulweller. #discogs #terrycallier #acidjazz
Nujabes included a version of Ordinary Joe on his 2005. Modal Soul album, of which ordinary Joe is perhaps the best known song. Modal Soul was @discogs top selling album of March 2020. Sadly neither Terry or Nujabes are with us any more to celebrate, so this thread is my tribute
