Influenced by a conversation with @JBMatthews, I wanted to take a departure from medicine for my next #tweetorial and focus on one of my big passions, music. Quarantine gave me some time to create some playlists of my favorites that I would like to share with some history. 1/
These are @Spotify playlists that I made. I have many more that I won't be talking about today for the sake of space, but feel free to browse my account. I will be presenting them in loose chronologic order since there is a lot of overlap. 2/
Beat is a genre of rock and roll that emerged in the late 50’s following rock’s first wave. Following the British Invasion, the Beat genre morphed into numerous permutations, notable of which was garage rock, freakbeat, psychedelia, and bubblegum pop. 3/

Northern Soul was a genre of soul that came about through the late 60’s club scene in Northern England. Comprised of primarily Detroit and Ohio soul songs that never made it big in the States... 5/

...the Northern Soul scene was known for it’s amphetamine-fuelled “all-nighters” where the Northern Soul dance style emerged at famous clubs like the Twisted Wheel, Wigan Casino, and Golden Torch.

Ska emerged in Jamaica in the late ’50s from the sound system scene of the ’40s where DJs would create mobile dance clubs in trucks. Popularized by artists like Prince Buster, ska was notable of its use of the “skank” guitar rhythm which placed... 7/

...an emphasis on the upstroke. Ska gave rise to the rocksteady and, later, reggae genres. Fun fact, you’ll notice a lot of mention of skinheads in ska and reggae songs from the late ’60s. 8/
This is because the skinhead and rude boy styles emerged from the scene and were later, ironically, commandeered by the Neo-nazi movement in the ’80s.

The late ’60s saw the rise of power-pop. In England the pub-rock and hard mod scenes developed alongside glam rock in the UK. Meanwhile in Australia, the Sharpie scene produced a similar sound.

In the mid-’70s, the garage, pub-rock, glam, power-pop styles combined into what is referred to now as proto-punk, with artists like MC5 and Iggy & The Stooges. 1977 saw the pinnacle of punk. 11/

The pub-rock scene paved the way for the DIY-spirit of punk, leading to more people starting bands with less technical prowess which was a giant middle finger to the record industry and society as a whole at the time.

Following the first wave of punk, a new scene emerged in New York City in the late '70s. As the genre of New Wave began to emerge, artists in NYC responded with the creation of No Wave, exemplified by Brian Eno’s compilation entitled “No New York.” 13/

The sound was typically dissonant and noisy but other bands in the scene embraced a dance sound influenced by emerging hip-hop, funk, and disco scenes in the '70s.

Meanwhile in England during the late '70s and early ’80s, a resurgence of interest in Mod culture, fueled by an interest in The Who’s movie “Quadrophenia.” Many bands during this time blended a New Wave influence. 15/

A love for Ska and Soul led to the 2 Tone style, which was viewed as the 2nd wave of Ska while bands like Dexy’s Midnight Runners (a reference to the use of Dexedrine in the Mod scene) focused on a Soul sound.

In the late ’70s, punk went many different directions. One of which was the Goth Rock genre. Bands like Joy Division began to adopt darker sounds in the late ’70s. 17/

The Batcave was a club night that occurred in London in the early ’80s that gave rise to the Goth and Death Rock genres. Artists drew heavily on influences by much earlier groups such as The Doors and Velvet Underground.

The introduction of synthesizers and the influence of Krautrock led to the development of Synth-Pop in the late ’70s with artists like Cat Stevens and Giorgio Moroder began integrating synth into their music. 19/

Synths then became integrated into Goth music, creating the Dark Wave genre in the early '80s.

In the early ’80s, bands like Aztec Camera and The Smiths paved the way for a new sound which has been referred to as Twee or C86. The name C86 comes from a cassette compilation released by the British music magazine, NME in 1986. 21/

Simultaneously in Dunedin, New Zealand, a genre affectionately named Kiwi Pop was developing as well.

The ’90s saw the rise of Shoegaze and Dreampop; two similar genres influenced by prominent bands from the ’80s like The Jesus and Mary Chain, Cocteau Twins, and AR Kane. 23/

The genre is known for a “wall-of-noise” sound, which led to the name Shoegaze since the artists would be staring at the guitar effects pedals at their feet while performing.

Simultaneously with Shoegaze, and with some cross-over, Britpop came into fashion. Many Shoegaze bands, such as Verve and Ride, began focusing on a more Britpop sound. 25/

In the ’90s, the Britpop scene began to mesh with the Madchester dance scene in Manchester.

Meanwhile in the US, some bands in the early 90’s indie rock scene began writing songs that were much slower and depressing, leading to the tongue-in-cheek term Slowcore or Sadcore being used to describe them.

What began as a DIY collective among friends in Athens, GA during the early 90’s evolved into a label and one of the most respected indie bands of all time, Neutral Milk Hotel. 28/
