There are about 220 archaeological #museums in Greece, outnumbering by far all other types of museums. Most are -directly or indirectly- run by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture through the regional Ephorates of Antiquities.

It's not surprising that, generally speaking, the word μουσείο is synonym for museums with archaeological collections in modern Greek conscience.

Naturally, places like the #Acropolis Museum or the National Archaeological in Athens @namuseumathens are the most popular in terms of visitors and fame. Personally, I love the dozens of smaller ones that are scattered like gems across the country.

Many of them are adjacent to or part of a site, such as the old Acropolis museum just meters off the #Parthenon, or the Stoa of Attalos at the Agora in Athens that was restored in the 1950s by the @ASCSAthens has been used as museum since. #MuseumsUnlocked
