2020 Expectations for Anthony Gibson
We have seen Rivera say Anthony Gibson has CMC like qualities, but what opportunities will Gibson have in Washington. I will dig into how the Redskins have used receiving RBs in the last three years as well as how Ron Rivera used them in CAR

All of the stats in this thread are PPR.
First I am going to look at what % Washington target RBs over the last 2 years.
2018 Team %Targets for RBs- 22.2% (109 targets)
2019 Team %Targets for RBs- 22.4% (104 targets)

The opportunity for targets for RBs in Washington is high (top half in RB target share over the last two years), but what about Rivera's usage of the RB?
2018= #12 in RB target share in NFL
2019= #11 in RB target share in NFL
2018= #12 in RB target share in NFL
2019= #11 in RB target share in NFL
The target% is higher than in Washington, but I believe that to be the CMC effect. I expect Washington to have a similar RB usage this year as the last 2.
2018- Team %Targets for RBs- 24.7%
2019- Team %Targets for RBs- 25.6%

Chris Thompson has been the receiving back for Washington in the time period we are looking into. Here are Thompson's FF points and yearly RB rank.
2018-FF Points=90.6 Rank=RB54 (10 games)
2019-FF Points=92.6 Rank=RB51 (11 games)
2018-FF Points=90.6 Rank=RB54 (10 games)
2019-FF Points=92.6 Rank=RB51 (11 games)
Chris Thompson has not played a full season in the last 2 years, so he doesn't show the full upside of a receiving back for Washington. To see the max potential, I am going to extrapolate Thompson's fantasy points to a full season.
2018-FF Points=161.0 RB Rank= RB27
2019-FF Points=134.7 RB Rank= RB39
Both of these 16 game RB finishes are not great, but Thompson also only had 1 TD in the last 2 years. If you look back to 2017, Thompson had 6 TDs and was RB28 with only playing 10 games.
2019-FF Points=134.7 RB Rank= RB39

If I add in Thompsons career average of TDs per season to the RB finishes from 2018 and 2019 things are looking brighter for the next Washington receiving back.
14 TDs over 5 years (over 8 games played)= 2.8
2018-FF Points=171.8 RB Rank= RB24
2019-FF Points=151.5 RB Rank= RB30

This thread was done to show the upside Gibson can have with the Washington offense. I expect Gibson to take over the Thompson role for Washington and be an RB3 throughout his career. I do not see a CMC ceiling instead I see a Tarik Cohen ceiling.
Gibson is a good value at pick #24 (according to SF DLF ADP) and should start producing day 1 for Washington! Thank you for reading all the way through. Please give me a follow and check out my other threads if you enjoyed this one. Now let's discuss!
