I’ve been my mom’s translator for her when going out to public places or talking to people on the phone and I have taken my hearing for granted as I’m able to wear a mask and talk to someone else in a mask and understand them perfectly
My mom usually goes shopping alone and mask wearing has been especially hard for her with being able to speak to others, like cashiers at grocery stores. People have swore at her and yelled at her for her not being able to understand anything
She has to tell cashiers beforehand that she’s deaf and won’t be able to hear them if they talk through their mask, but it’s their choice if they want to remove their mask to ask her a question or tell her to do something.
The majority of people, including myself, don’t realize how difficult this is for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. It’s easy for me to go out in public without feeling left out of a conversation or scared that I’m going to miss something
I guess my point is for anyone reading this thread and using masks or going out to work or public places, please be patient with those who rely on sign language or lip-reading to get by!
