This weekend's quandary: If I go to a marshy park for a walk, just how wet will it be?
Well, here I go…
I’m glad I wore boots.
The Hegewisch Marsh Natural Area’s hemi-marsh
On the Southeast Side, you can often see industry juxtaposed with nature.
A tiny tadpole (maybe an eighth of an inch long)
Panorama of Hegewisch Marsh, with the Ford Motor Company's Chicago Assembly Plant in the distance.
A glimpse of fins
By the way, I think I am the only human being in this 133-acre park right now. Good place for social distancing. https://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/parks-facilities/hegewisch-marsh-park
The work of beavers?
I’ve heard a few frogs jumping, sometimes accompanied by a sound like “Meep!” But then they disappear into the marshy water. This is the first one I’ve managed to capture on camera.
Calumet River
Needs more logs.
I’m going to go this way instead.
The old river channel
A swamp in Chicago
The @inaturalist app tells me this plant is an angelica.
There’s another.
See you later, Hegewisch Marsh.
A few more photos from Hegewisch Marsh, which I took with a telephoto lens on my Canon…
A close-up of a tadpole
I saw this little thing skittering across some water. @inaturalist suggests that it’s a six-spotted fishing spider.
Super slow-motion close-up of that frog jumping
