My take on MFL 1: Link written word explicitly with the spoken.LOTS of reading OUT LOUD. Develops vocabulary & grammar, speaking & listening. Also gives base for writing. The Roman Alphabet is a gift! Make lots of links with English & MFL being taught.
MFL 2: use very repetitive language, recycle high frequency/high value chunks so embed: It was/I went/I’m going/because/it will be. Recycle in every ‘topic’. Be transparent & use direct translation: I me call/ i’ was / I am gonED / I’ve 11 years.
MFL 3: PROFS - past reasons opinions future subjunctive from the start. Be obvious. Teach: bien que je m’entende / sois / fasse / aille / aie / prenne. Il est rare que / il faut que. Sell to kids how good they sound. Embed these to impress & flesh out any ‘topic’.
MFL 4: Be loosely topic based. Weave past topics & grammar into new ones. ‘Although I am sporty it is rare that I go to the beach when it rains because I prefer to go to the cinema when it snows but it’s necessary that I do my homework before going out the evening.’
MFL 5: parallel texts. No guess work. English on left. MFL on right. Read from known to unknown. Yesterday evening I am gonED to the centre sporty: hier Je suis allÉ au centre sportif. Of course u analyse dodgy English. U teach kids meaning of each word & thus how to manipulate.
MFL 6: teach patterns, run towards high frequency errors. Drill down to ascertain why high frequency errors occur. Tweak teaching accordingly. Tell kids: Lots of people make this mistake. Here’s how u avoid it. Don’t let them make high frequency errors in 1st place. Be preemptive
MFL7: Read using CUDDLES. COUNT letters in word. UNDERLINE vowel combos. DOUBLE UNDERLINE double letters. DOT silent letters. Mark LIAISONS. Make all accents, eg, É, very obvious. STORIES as mnemonics where effective. 7 preemptive strategies. Develops independence & empowering.
MFL8: Supported self check translations. I went to the stadium with my brother and my cousin but it as a bit boring in my opinion in any case. Each his tastes, as they say. J s a a s a m f e m c m c’ u p e à m a e t c. C s g, c i d. Weave the same/similar language in repeatedly.
MFL9: Who’s brightest kid? How many translation sentences will he do in 20 minutes? 20? Prépare 30 just in case. Whole class works independently. When brightest kid gets to 20. Stop. Or let him go on to 30. Slower kids had lots of practice opportunity too. Over learn. Mastery.
MFL10: from translation to more independent? Include these 10 compulsory structures. Each one at least twice. Include these 10 compulsory words. Here are further 10 structures & 10 words u could use. Preempt ‘writer’s block’. Self check mechanism. Recycle impressive structures.
